Peter Paul Congregation

The Peter Paul Congregation predates both the village and school in the named Hermannsburg settlement. Its Lutheran heritage is expressed through worship, music, education, service and the everyday life it shares with the village and school.

The congregation is part of the Northeastern Evangelical Lutheran Church in South Africa (NELCSA). For current services and congregational contact, visit the Peter Paul Congregation website.

Why language, education and community mattered

Lutheran tradition placed strong emphasis on vernacular scripture, literacy, education and personal engagement with faith. Harms’s missionary approach drew on those principles: learning the language of the people among whom missionaries lived, engaging conscience and faith directly, and connecting learning with service and responsibility.

In Hermannsburg, these commitments helped make language, education and practical community life part of the same story. They are principles to be approached with care, rather than claims that any tradition has always lived them out perfectly.
