Mission House Museum, Kaffeestube and wagon house in the historic precinct

01

The Mission House Museum

At the heart of the historic precinct, the Mission House Museum is one of the places where Hermannsburg’s layered memory is kept. The 1855 Mission House was inaugurated as a museum in 1992. A visit moves through buildings, rooms, objects and records that open onto both the settlement’s past and the wider local story.

It is a useful starting point for understanding how people lived, worked, made, learned and moved through this part of KwaZulu-Natal — with the museum’s missionary origins held as one part of that larger picture.

What you will find

The permanent exhibition includes rooms for church, school, Zulu and Indian histories, as well as domestic spaces, workshop and archaeology material. Collections include household items, toys, agricultural tools, trade equipment, photographs and documentary records.

These holdings create a fuller view of local life: missionary settlement and domestic life sit alongside Zulu material culture, Indian family history, farming, crafts, archaeology and present-day Hermannsburg.

Stories and collections

Among the museum’s noted holdings are watercolours of Zulu life by the artist Simon Mnguni (1885–1956), as well as mission journals, family records and historical photographs. The site also preserves early buildings including the Old Kitchen and the first church-and-school building.

Take time with the museum’s own material and guides for the detail behind these stories; this page is an introduction rather than a substitute for its collections.

Kaffeestube

Beside the museum, the Kaffeestube is housed in the Wagonhouse. It brings an easy, welcoming pause to a heritage visit: coffee, light lunches, baked treats and conversation in the historic precinct. An original ox wagon is displayed there as part of the setting.

The museum currently lists light lunches, German Butterkuchen, chocolate brownies, melktert, and hot and cold drinks. As menus can change, please check with the museum before making a special trip.
